Carri Mundane AKA Cassette Playa PART 2

I found this interview with Mundane on hypebeast.com and it is very insightful! Had to share! I do apologise for the obsession but she is Revolutionising!
(That's not a word is it ::/....IS NOW!)

Thanks for taking some time off to do this interview with us. Let’s start with some questions on the background of Cassette Playa. So when did you start up Cassette Playa and what inspired you to create your own label?
Cassette Playa was started to fulfill an ancient Essex prophecy.
I’ve been doing Cassette Playa in some form since I graduated in 2004, Nicola Formichetti (creative director of Dazed and fashion director at Vogue Homme Japan) bought my graduate collection for his store – side by side in Tokyo. I made collections for/sold to them right up until the store closed at the end of last year. I was also working as a stylist – with M.I.A and for ID/Dazed/Super Super. I’ve done 6 collections and showed at London fashion week for the past 4 seasons.
The name Cassette Playa is quite unique. How did you come up with this name?
It comes from my name, I guess it’s my alter ego, I like superheroes and tribes and gangs, and with that there’s always a name. I’m also a bit shy so that helps *laughs. I was over the name for a bit because it sounds kinda retro and with Cassette Playa I’m always thinking of the future but I think the name has kinda lost any previous meaning/association now (at least it has for me/I hope so). I guess it’s like that with any brand or band name, you build your own identity and give words new meaning.
So where do you get your inspirations from for your designs?
Everywhere. The Internet… But on repeat: comics, science fiction, horror films, computer games, rave, metal, gifs, and web based art.
I like things that are pure and graphic, keep it cartoon… cartoon couture.
I’m especially interested in ancient civilizations, I believe in preserving and moving forward that knowledge, imagine ancient rituals with new technology and adopted cultural references. I envision these rituals assimilated in a future post apocalyptic city.
What do you think of the current fashion landscape? With the economies of the world taking a bit of a hit, does it pose a bigger problem for you then brands with more conservative styles?
I think there is always a market for luxury and in the economic situation people will still crave something unique. If we are heading for economic collapse, end of modern civilization this is your battle paint! Fast forward the apocalypse.
Is it important for people who wear Cassette Playa to understand your direction and inspirations?

Yes but I don’t think fashion should be over-intellectualized, your world can be deep but the communication should be instant. I know and hope it’s obvious that Cassette Playa has lots of levels but as long as the people wearing Cassette Playa get it on some level (rather than following hype or a trend) then I’m cool.
To you, what is the relationship between visual design and communication?
Fashion is pure communication. Your style communicates who you are and what you believe in – that’s bait. I’m interested in coded communication, global visual and web based languages like gifs, smileys and text messaging. I see them as modern day hieroglyphics with Cassette Playa we don’t have one logo and reject traditional branding but I think we have built a strong and recognizable visual identity. I see our prints as cyber symbolism.
Let’s talk about your recent collaboration with Nike Sportswear. How long ago did the planning begin as the Blazer was seen during the launch of your 2008 spring/summer campaign.
We first designed the Cassette Playa x Nike Blazer for our spring/summer 2008 show “Future Primative” we worked with Jesse Leyva to perfect the design for its launch this year.
What are some brands that you respect?
Jeremy Scott, Bape, Billionaire Boys Club, Walter van Beirendonck, Gareth Pugh, Raf Simons, Bernard Wilhelm, Romain Kremer, Stussy, Undercover, Pam, Thierry Mugler, jpg + jcdc.
What’s on the horizon for Cassette Playa?
This season we are showing a diffusion at MAGIC Las Vegas and more limited edition digital print pieces. Womenswear next season! Nike collab drops in winter 2009. A few different collaborations are also in the works with Rockers, Phenomenon, P-Thug from Chromeo and more this year including another potential show with jcdc. I want to do more styling, shoots and keep working with artists and bands. I’m just discussing a project with Shawn Mortensen and have some art and film projects I want to realize. And I’d like to spend more time in Japan if I can, me and verbal have been talking about doing something together in Tokyo.

Carri Mundane AKA Cassette Playa

Right. So we were set a 1000 words contextual studies essay on a designer or artist and I chose Carri Mundane! the ULTIMATE AMAZING DESIGNER!
And I thought I'd share my 1000 words for anyone who wanted to know a little more about this genius!
I bring you the modern day Vivienne Westwood
(WITH A LOT MORE NEON)
...
CARRRIIIIII MUNDANEEEEEEEE

Cassette Playa is the fashion label of English fashion designer Carri Mundane. After graduating in fashion design from Westminster University she has worked with several people including M.I.A., Dizzee rascal, Patrick Wolf, Afrikan Boy and Boy Better Know and has presented her work four times at MAN as part of London Fashion Week. In 2002 she was nominated best menswear designer at the British Fashion Awards alongside Christopher Bailey and Alexander McQueen.
Mundane as well as a fashion designer has been a contributor and stylist for i-D magazine and has collaborated with Dazed and Confused Japan with her designs having been worn by Rihanna, Nelly Furtado and Nicki Minaj. She likes working with magazines which represent youth culture as they are ones which pick up on things really early. She has also collaborated with Nike for a computer game and the capsule collection and also concluded with a limited edition blazer which allowed access to a different audience however it was also seen to be about technology and innovation. Moreover she has been commissioned by Nintendo DS for the My Sims game. Her work has been presented in the Fashion V Sport exhibition at the V&A and she herself has appeared in the 2010 6th series of the Apprentice.  Being a menswear designer, what inspires me greatly is Mundane’s first ever women’s project with Stussy, because as she has said it shows what she can do. Her creativity is never ending. A brilliant Fashion Designer or any designer to me is someone who can be moved out of their comfort zone and willingly work towards extremely popular outcomes to not only be sold out online but also to be worn by Celebrity’s. Nevertheless Mundane has said she “only wants to collaborate where there’s a connection between the brand and Cassette Playa”.

Although being very successful now, Mundane has said that she has always had an interest in fashion but more in the styling aspect over the fashion side. She is interested in the way people dress. “I see style as symbolism and I’ve always been interested in sub cultures. I decided to make a brand because it’s like art on a mass level, it reaches more people. I like the way everything is so accelerated in fashion”. She has also said that her favourite season from Cassette Playa is the first season show SS07 (LSI). It was all about circuit bending and was the first time she experimented with digital print which is now a big part of Cassette Playa so is extremely influential and has made her want to create more videos.

My clothes are quite cartoon but I don’t have the intention of making people look funny” said my Mundane. Being retro or ironic is something she is adamant that Cassette Playa is not! Nevertheless she is influenced by: 90’s skater fashion; Japanese anime; African prints; neon; 90’s rave; animals; science and science fiction.  Bernard Wilhelm; Jeremy Scott; JCIDC; Raf Simons; Vivienne Westwood; Kim Jones and Nigo from Bathing Ape are Carri Mundane’s greatest inspirations. She is inspired with artists who have links with street culture. She believes Nigo is “ultimate at building an iconic brand and has changed the way street wear is seen”. Grime music used to inspire Mundane greatly however she believes there are only a few artists out there who are still innovative: “Wiley are Dizzee are still producing good music despite having gone mainstream”. Grime initially inspired her because of the producers for example Ruff Sqwad had some amazing producers: “They didn’t sound like anything else and are very British”. Music is a great influence on Mundane. She says: “I can talk about music way longer than fashion”.

Music as a core area of inspiration towards fashion is something I can relate to, especially music such as Hip-Hop. Labels such as Cassette Playa aren’t made to go along with demands of the mainstream public, and neither is Hip-Hop music. On the other hand they reflect more emotion and personality and are a lot more unique and difficult to get perfected. There is a lot more energy, knowledge, creativity and bravery needed. Bold statements are made in such designs and music causing a lot of debate which I find extremely interesting. With Hip-Hop a story behind lyrics and real life experience is what makes a successful song. With designs that don’t follow the high street or high demand of buyers, a story of somewhat will be behind the creation and ideas and there will have been real life inspiration. However brands such as Cassette Playa are not the only one’s which have links with music. All designers require inspiration, be it something fashion related or something completely odd such as sea life or rain. Writers of the greatest songs also need inspiration. Be they a composer or a lyric writer, inspiration is needed to get them flowing and without the inspiration in both cases; the process and final outcome will not be as interesting as the outcomes with an inspiration.

“Life is like a computer game. We are all characters in our own game fighting to get to the next level. This is the uniform of that game”. This is a quote of Mundane’s that I found extremely interesting. As mentioned above all designers need inspiration and a good design will have a story behind it. The idea of a computer game is Mundane’s story which amazes me incredibly! What is even more inspirational is her having had given her designs a purpose and using them not a way to make men “look like big girls, in fact forces them to be bigger men”. Cassette Playa is a distinctive label which I am incredibly inspired by. The use of colour, reasoning and bold idea’s is extremely eye catching and is definitely an angle of fashion that I would love to experiment with however with Womenswear. Today’s fashion market is in great need for unique designer’s like Mundane, as standing out is becoming less a taboo and more a trend.

Haute Couture Fashion Week

I just came across an article on fashionindie.com on the 10 most and least oscar worthy gowns. So i had to share because some of these are absolutely beautiful whilst others really need questioning!

I understand how in many case when there's a no/yes poll, we all look at the no and think hey that's not too bad and look at some of the yes' and just think how on earth did that get a yes! but you see it all depends on the reasoning your saying yes or no! many of the designs in the "nuh-uh" category are actually quite amazing designs for example Valli's design if toned down a little would actually be quite nice, nevertheless we are in this case sorting them with Oscars in mind! and oscars of 2012 i must add, being the reason for which Versace's last design didn't make it through! Likewise some that did make it through, I really don't think are that impressive! they'd look beautiful on when stylised but on the catwalk there is no way the Valentino dress stands out to me! it looks more like a beach maxi than an Oscars gown.
My ultimate favourites would have to be the Elie Saab and Giambattista Valli dresses! They are both beautiful and stunning in their own ways! the Saab being very innocent and youthful with a ray of sunshine from the pale yellow gown and also being very unexpected whilst the Valli is extremely elegant with that beautiful statement bow in the middle to split the top from the bottom! Bring on a TOGA PARTY!
That is all for now! I am still working on that Margiela piece, so that is soon to come...
